Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region win a boost for the community
WATERLOO REGION – November 17, 2017 – The teamwork by the board of directors at Habitat for Humanity, Waterloo Region was recognized at the Manulife Governance Excellence Award Thursday night.
The award presentation kicked off the beginning of Capacity Canada’s Manulife Board Governance BootCamp (Nov. 16-18) at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Conference Centre in Kicthener. The annual award recognizes outstanding board work in Waterloo Region’s charitable non-profit sector.
“An understanding within a board to strategically plan is vital to keeping a non-profit organization on track and working more efficiently,” said Capacity Canada CEO Cathy Brothers. “And the team from Habitat demonstrated their willingness to do this after attending one of our Manulife Board Governance BootCamps last year.”
Habitat for Humanity, Waterloo Region has made it their mission since 1988 to mobilize community partners in building affordable housing and promoting home ownership to break the cycle of poverty.
Habitat was among nine nominations received for the Manulife award. The award is presented to an organization that implements new ideas and concepts to improve the overall board performance.
“I think Capacity Canada has given us a roadmap about how we can improve and I think we’ve really embraced it,” said Habitat for Humanity CEO Karen Redman, adding how thrilled they were to receive the award.
Habitat for Humanity recognized the need to improve four areas within their board. Habitat was eager to implement these changes and impressed a panel of three judges by accomplishing this in a short period of time.
The winning organization is granted a $5,000 unrestricted prize.
Capacity Canada has held Board Governance BootCamps since 2009 in effort to help board leaders and top administrators better understand their roles in the operation of charitable non-profits. Capacity has hosted BootCamps in Hamilton, Ont., St. John’s, NL., and very recently in Fort McMurray, Alta.
“The BootCamps are a wonderful way for these board members who volunteer their time and expertise to fine tune their collective impact,” said Brothers.
