Celebrating the legacy of the Hallman Family

If you have been to the Waterloo Region or live around here, it’s no doubt you would have experienced the Hallman Foundation’s legacy. From Wilfrid Laurier University’s Lyle S. Hallman Faculty of social work to the University of Waterloo’s School of Public Health Sciences to The Eden Oak Trail Park developed by Hallman Construction, the Hallman Foundation’s work has impacted every nook and corner of the region.

Last month, Capacity Canada had the privilege to honour the legacy of the Hallman family as 300 people came together at the launch of the new book authored by John G. Fast – The Hallman Legacy. Since 2004, the Hallman Foundation has disbursed around $90 million, and it now gives $15 million a year in grants supporting more than 100 local charities, organizations and grassroots efforts strengthening communities.

“We are privileged to have the opportunity to work closely with the Lyle S. Hallman Foundation. It’s an honour to be a part of this celebration and book launch. The foundation has played a key role in building a supportive community in the Waterloo Region over the past 100 years, and it’s important to learn about its impact,” said Cathy Brothers, CEO, Capacity Canada. “The foundation’s work has left a lasting imprint on this community. It is indeed a legacy.”

While the Hallman Foundation funds programs and initiatives in several different areas, children and youth initiatives, particularly those directed at healthy development and access to recreational facilities, are at the heart of its work. Higher education has also been a priority, and the foundation continues to support post-secondary education through grants to the University of Waterloo, Conestoga College and Wilfrid Laurier University. The foundation believes health is fundamental to community well-being and promotes healthcare in through grants to institutions like – Grand River Hospital, Cambridge Memorial Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital. With the onset of the pandemic, the foundation funded and supported various projects with over $7 million under Social Impact Grants!

If you want to learn about the Hallman Foundation and its impactful work to build a strong and resilient community, give The Hallman Legacy a read. The book offers insights into the personal and professional lives and the legacy of the Hallman family.

“My original goal for this book was to commemorate the 100-plus years of our Hallman family in the business. But as you’ll see, it doesn’t chronicle one singular journey — our legacy is the result of an amazing collaborative effort,” says Jim Hallman. “This book details a very personal family history. My family has always believed in working hard and giving back to the community. And that’s what we have been trying to do all this time,” he adds.

The Hallman Legacy is much more than business success and financial largesse, and that’s a legacy worth celebrating!
