Waterloo Region – December 5, 2021 – Capacity Canada’s annual three-day Board Governance BootCamp, sponsored by Manulife, concluded on Saturday, December 4. The theme of this year’s BootCamp was Transforming Governance: Preparing Your Board for Diversity. Mumilaaq Qaqqaq, former Member of Parliament from Nunavut, set the stage for deep, transformational learnings with her keynote session on the opening night of the event on December 2.

Led by an incredible roster of Indigenous, Black, and Muslim speakers, the BootCamp was attended by over 200 participants from across Canada. A spectacular lineup of 20 speakers covered vast topics on diversity and inclusion. Some of our speakers included Olumide (Mide) Akerewusi, Founder and CEO of AGENTSC Inc.; Andria Barrett, a prominent Black business leader and a SheEO Activator; and Memona Hossain, one of the Board of Directors of the Muslim Association of Canada, among others.

“At Capacity Canada, we understand that diverse boards bring a variety of insights, experiences and perspectives to the table, and these lead to effective board governance. This year’s BootCamp has prepared participants to lead organizational change and culture shifts associated with diversity in their respective organizations,” says Cathy Brothers, CEO, Capacity Canada.

This year’s Board Governance BootCamp was intended to tackle diversity and equity issues that have the most significant impact on good governance. The virtual event covered anti-Indigenous racism, anti-Black racism, and Islamophobia. Sessions focused on creating an equitable board by countering barriers to diversity and inclusion. Panel discussions also included perspectives from Black and Muslim corporate leaders on organizational leadership.

Participants were given opportunities to reflect on their learnings and experiences and create a plan for the next steps to transformation. Our speakers and facilitators ensured each participant left the program with a plan for addressing diversity and equity opportunities in their respective organizations. For the first time, this year’s BootCamp was also Communications Accessible for Deaf/Deaf Persons with an ASL Interpreter and Closed Captioning for Hard Hearing Person or Person with Hearing Loss.

A follow-up session on April 1, 2022, will provide the opportunity for sharing and celebrating progress towards organizational change.
