WATERLOO REGION –   October 17, 2017 – Members of Capacity Canada’s board of directors are taking a trip this week to Fort McMurray, Alta., to participate in the national charity’s Board Governance BootCamp for Social Profits in that community, which continues to recover after a devastating wildfire last year.

The three-day BootCamp, sponsored by the Suncor Energy Foundation, kicks off Thursday, Oct. 19, and will provide governance training to non-profit boards to equip them with the tools to develop action plans that deliver noticeable improvements in their boardrooms. About 20 organizations from that region will be taking part.

“Going through the BootCamp together, as a board, will allow us to reflect on things that may be impacting us as a board, considering how we may do things differently and most importantly learning from other boards,” says Joanna Lohrenz, Capacity Canada board chair. “The BootCamp will be attended by several organizations and I know there will be lots of opportunities to talk about case studies.”

Capacity Canada held a similar BootCamp in Fort McMurray in 2015, but has continued to work closely with many non-profits in that region affected by the wildfire which destroyed at least 2,400 structures and forced more than 80,000 residents to flee.

“It’s exciting for us to be going back to Fort McMurray and having our board members there will only strengthen the ties we’ve made in that community,” says Capacity Canada CEO Cathy Brothers.

The Capacity Canada board also includes Steve Farlow, Terry Reidel, Joe Sehl and Fort McMurray resident Jeanette Bancarz.
