In this two-hour session, you will gain a solid understanding of the fundamentals of incorporating as a non-profit corporation and the requirements to qualify as a registered charity in Canada.
Workshop Overview:
- Exploring Structures:
- Examine the pros and cons of various organizational structures.
- Decide whether to incorporate and, if so, in what form (e.g., business, nonprofit, co-op).
- Incorporation Steps:
- Learn the steps to incorporate as a nonprofit.
- Discuss major decisions to be made during the incorporation process.
- Charity Registration:
- Understand what it takes to qualify as a registered charity under the Income Tax Act.
- Learn about the application process and common reasons for application failures.

Benjamin Miller
Staff Lawyer and Policy Advisor at the Ontario Nonprofit Network
Benjamin Miller (he/him) is a staff lawyer on the Nonprofit Law Ontario project where he focuses on the legal needs of nonprofits and charities. Over the past 7 years, Benjamin has answered thousands of nonprofit law questions, developed and delivered dozens of workshops, and developed online interactive tools, including a bylaw builder for the ONCA. Benjamin holds a JD and MPP from the University of Toronto and an MA in political theory from the University of Ottawa.
