Kelly Laurila has dedicated much of her life and work to the pursuit of living in harmony with all, embodying a profound Indigenous philosophy that underpins her ongoing advocacy and commitment to justice.

In her role as our new Executive-In-Residence, Kelly brings to us a wealth of knowledge and nearly three decades of experience working closely with Indigenous communities. Her remarkable journey includes serving as a board member and president of an Indigenous housing board for an impressive 11-year term. She currently holds the position of board chair within a grassroots Indigenous group, where she passionately supports Indigenous youth transitioning out of the child welfare system, offering wraparound permanency and guidance.

Beyond these roles, Kelly also contributes her expertise as a dedicated board member for Family & Children Services in Waterloo Region. Her dedication to education also shines through, with over 12 years of teaching experience at post-secondary institutions, primarily focusing on Indigenous-centered social work courses.

Kelly’s identity is deeply intertwined with her work and her Indigenous heritage. “I identify as an Indigenous Sami woman, partner to an Anishinaabe man and firekeeper, long-time songcarrier in the community and in a federal penitentiary, carrier of Indigenous knowledges and experiences, social worker and educator,” shares Kelly.

Kelly’s academic journey culminated in a PhD in Philosophy, with a research focus on the ethical dimensions of engagement between Indigenous women and girls and local law enforcement. Her expertise is undeniable, and she possesses exceptional skills in facilitating discussions on critical topics such as equity, belonging, the Truth and Reconciliation process, colonization and decolonization, social injustices and justice, as well as social work values, ethics, and practice. She extends her teaching and guidance to both community and post-secondary education settings.

In her own words, Kelly emphasizes her commitment to walking through life with kindness and integrity, considering an ethical life as the compass guiding her toward balance.

Capacity Canada recognizes itself as incredibly fortunate to welcome Kelly as an Executive-In-Residence. Her wealth of experience, unwavering dedication to Indigenous communities, and her commitment to fostering a just and equitable society will undoubtedly contribute significantly to our organization’s mission and impact.
