Grant from Lyle S. Hallman Foundation helps Capacity Canada stay focused on non-profit improvement

WATERLOO REGION, ON — December 8, 2014: Capacity Canada has received a $400,000 grant over two years from the Lyle S. Hallman Foundation.

“The foundation believes, as we do, that well-governed, innovative community groups change lives for the better,” said Cathy Brothers, executive director in residence for Capacity Canada. “This allows us to continue our work strengthening charitable non-profits in Waterloo Region, and share the knowledge we’ve gained here with the rest of Canada.”

Capacity Canada supports community groups by connecting non-profit leaders with each other, and with experienced mentors. Governance — the relationship between boards of directors and the staff of charitable non-profits — is Capacity’s biggest area of interest. It runs governance programs in partnership with Manulife.

Capacity Waterloo Region changed its name to Capacity Canada earlier this year to reflect its involvement with organizations in such places as Fort McMurray, AB, Renfrew County, ON and St. John’s, NL. The organization is five years old.

Established in 2003, the Lyle S. Hallman Foundation supports social improvement in Waterloo Region, with a primary focus on health care, education and services for children and youth.

Unrestricted operating funds support Capacity Canada’s efforts to help non-profits excel, said Laura Manning, the foundation’s executive director.

“Non-profit organizations face a landscape that is increasingly complex and challenging.  An investment in Capacity Canada is a means to ensure that these creative, hard-working organizations have access to the training, supports and resources they need to keep making our community stronger,” Manning said.

Steve Farlow, chair of Capacity Canada’s board of directors, said Capacity is fortunate to have funding partners that see the benefits of enhancing leadership and governance in the charitable non-profit sector.

“This support from the Hallman Foundation really allows Capacity Canada to focus on its core mission of fueling innovation in the vibrant and important social sector,” Farlow said.
