Phase One: Preparation for Strategic Planning

  • Plan – co-creating a timeline and process with ED/CEO and board to achieve your outcomes
  • Education – training on available topics including strategy governance
  • Situational Review – assessing the external environment and internal capabilities

Our process always begins with discovery – learning about your organization. We then develop a timeline and discuss who needs to be involved with the process.

Engagement, Execution, and Communication

Stakeholder Engagement and Assessment Tools

Capacity Canada can do as much, or as little stakeholder engagement as needed. Depending upon the organization, this might involve surveys, focus groups, and interviews. Since our Executives in Residence work with nonprofits across Canada, we have an excellent sense of the overall sector landscape; however, we may ask the organization to help identify trends or risks specific to their industry within the sector. We have a variety of tools at our disposal to ensure that we understand the needs of your organization. These include our NFP Assessment.

Strategic Plan Development

We will work to create a written Strategic Plan based on the Strategic Priorities your team identifies. The format can be tailored to your needs, but there is generally a one-page public-facing document that provides the priorities at a high level accompanied by a longer internal document that details the specific goals under each priority.

Communications and Implementation Support

Finally, we’ll work with you to consider a communications plan for sharing your Strategic Plan with various stakeholders. We can also work with your leadership team to develop an operational plan and tools for your ED or CEO to use in reporting on progress.
